Mobile Apps Workshop 1 – Bangor 8th December 2010

The first Welsh Mobile Apps Workshop was held in Bangor on Wednesday 8th December, with 35 intrepid entrepreneurs ‘understanding, thinking, & creating’ ideas for new apps.

“The workshop is designed to aid the creative process. We explore ideas for new mobile apps using new digital technologies. Our aim is to explore ideas that could become a new product or service, with teams taking forward their ideas and creating new businesses,” said Martin Owen, Strategy Manager, Inventorium.

On the Mobile App Workshop John Bamber, Venture Wales said,

“I came to the workshop to gain knowledge.  Creating new mobile apps could be a benefit to local SME’s.  The presentations were informative and the ‘Inventorium Poker’ card game sparked ideas.  I can see destinations in Wales working together to build apps for their locality.  The majority of tourism businesses in Wales are very small.  I can’t see them, in the short term, developing mobile apps because of cost.  This cost is multiplied up because of the multiple platforms.  Tourism businesses need to work together on apps to ‘up sell’ the destination – how about a Betws-y–Coes.app or a Llanberis.app?”

Opportunities, 4iP – Seeking Digital Visionaries

UK’s Channel 4 seek far sighted rule breakers to create a new vision for public service media in the digital age. Commisssioners for education (Matt Locke) , cross platform media (Louise Brown) and the director of their 4iP programme (Tom Loosemore) told an audience in Cardiff last week that they want to invest in truly innovative projects.

4iP breaks the mould of commissioning. 4iP will invest equity in good teams with good ideas and support further funding from regional development agencies. Some of the first year’s investments are already making waves like the iPhone audio blogging of Audioboo and the location/social mapping of Mapumental. The presenters made it clear that they sought projects that carried the values that Channel 4′s existing brands offered: youth, engagement, public voice, campaigning, social and participative. This is a great opportunity to develop innovative products with the support of one of the UK’s leading media brands.
