Flood Awareness Workshop
6 September, 2011
The Inventorium team were approached by the Flood Risk Management team at Denbighshire County Council to hold a small workshop to focus on uses of new technology to make people more aware of and more prepared for the risks of flooding.
The day brought together experts in flooding from local authorities and Environment Agency with designers, technologists, consultants and ‘flood survivors’ to explore new ideas in this area.
The day began with an overview of the problem area from Wayne Hope, Denbighsire County Council. This was followed by presentations of possible solution options from Martin Owen and Dewi Lloyd (Inventorium) and Neil Deakin (Steljes); possible solutions areas included games, visualisation, augmented reality and display systems.
The attendees then divided into groups and used a set of four cards with headings: Who? (type of person or group), What? (information to communicated), Where? (location of information communication), How? (technologies and new methods of communicating the info), to pull together and discuss new ideas.
The teams then selected the best ideas and created posters for the rest of the attendees to view over lunch.
The final session of the day was to select one idea to present to the rest of the attendees. 3 ideas were presented; an interactive game to help home and business owners develop more robust flood plans, a new type of flood alert system and a new communication method for vulnerable groups.
Venue: Optic Glyndwr, St. Asaph
